The Backyard Astronomer's Guide

Terence Dickinson & Alan Dyer

The books in this series are the the most complete ones I have ever seen about amateur astronomy. The text is written clearly and is easily read and everything is illustrated beautifully, often with the authors' own pictures.

ISBN 0-921820-11-9
The first book in this series was published in 1991. The material and techniques discussed in the pre-digital era are quite outdated today, but are still very interesting to read.

ISBN 1-55209-507-X
The second, completely rewritten edition was published in 2002. Plenty of new text and techniques and all illustrations in full color.

ISBN-13: 978-1-55407-344-3 / ISBN-10: 1-55407-344-8
The third, rewritten and expanded edition was published in 2008. Again with many changes focussing on the development of techniques and equipment. Many websites are mentioned. New in the book are two chapter on using GOTO and computer controlled telescopes and mounts.

Field Guide to the Night Sky

A handy, small yet very complete book.

Sky Atlas: ISBN 0-933346-92-1 / Sky Atlas Companion: ISBN 0933346-95-6

Burnham's Celestial Handbook

Robert Burnham, Jr.

Deel 1 - ISBN 0-486-24063-0
Deel 2 - ISBN 0-486-24064-9
Deel 3 - ISBN 0-486-24065-7

The most complete catalog ever written, according to many. Much of the content is a bit outdated by now, but it remains a masterpiece.
Unfortunately Robert Burnham Jr.'s work did not receive the recognition it deserved during his lifetime. Robert Burnham Jr. passed away anonymously in San Diego, California in 1994.
